Soap Carving Club

A student club for developing hand skills through the practice of soap carving.

We meet to carve soap and to develop the hand skills that careful work requires: fine motor control, a steady hand, and accuracy with an instrument. Materials and tools are provided, and no experience is necessary.

Control

Fine motor control

Carving trains the small, precise movements of the hand. Members work from basic cuts toward detailed forms, developing accuracy and a steady grip through regular practice.

Instruments

Working with tools

Sessions use fine carving instruments, including tools modelled on those used in surgery and dentistry. Handling precise instruments develops the control that precise work depends on.

Progress

Measurable improvement

Hand skill improves with repetition and feedback. Work is kept and reviewed across the term so members can see how their control and accuracy have developed.

Sessions

How a session works

01

Arrive

Sessions are open to all members and require no registration in advance. Arrive when you are able to.

02

Instruction

An officer demonstrates the technique for the session: how to hold the instrument, how much pressure to apply, and the order of cuts.

03

Practice

You work at your own pace for the remainder of the session. Finished pieces are yours to keep.
